What It Is
Parsley, garlic, onion, dill, chives, basil, pepper and salt make a dry ranch-style blend for mayo, dips, chicken or anything else that has been acting painfully plain.
Origin
American ranch-style seasoning wearing an Applejack hat. The orchard is fictional; dill remains stubbornly real.
Fun Fact
Ranch dressing was developed in the United States in the mid-20th century and became so popular it now behaves less like a condiment and more like a national infrastructure project.
Ingredients
- 3 tbsp dried parsley
- 3 tsp garlic powder
- 3 tsp onion powder
- 3 tsp dried onion flakes
- 2 tsp dill weed
- 2 tsp chives
- 1 tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- 1 tsp basil
Steps
- Whisk all dried ingredients together until evenly combined.
- Transfer to a spice jar or sealed bag.
- Use in mayo, yogurt, sour cream, or directly as a seasoning rub.
Notes
This makes a genuinely good dry rub beyond just dips and dressings — try it on roasted chicken or vegetables too.
Substitutions
This dried herb and spice blend is forgiving — adjust any single ingredient up or down based on taste. Dried chives can replace some of the onion flakes for a milder onion flavour.
Storage
Store airtight at room temperature for up to 1 year, though the herbs smell best within about 6 months.
Freezing
Freezing is usually unnecessary for a small batch of sauce. If you do freeze it, use small portions and expect creamy or emulsified sauces to need a good whisk after thawing.
