What It Is
Elderflower, honey, citrus peel and vanilla are simmered into a fragrant syrup, cooled, fortified with vodka and rested before serving as a Tolkien-inspired cordial.
Origin
Miruvor is a fictional cordial associated with Rivendell in Tolkien’s legendarium. This is an Earth-kitchen interpretation, since Lothlórien still refuses delivery apps.
Fun Fact
Aroma changes how strongly we perceive flavour, which is why herbs, citrus peel and warm spices can make a simple recipe taste far more complicated than the effort involved.
Ingredients
- 2 cups elderflower nectar
- ½ cup honey
- ½ cup water
- Peel of ½ lemon
- Peel of 1 orange
- 1 vanilla bean
- Pinch salt
- 2–3 cups vodka
Steps
- Combine elderflower, honey, water, citrus peels, vanilla and salt. Bring just to a boil, reduce heat and simmer 10 minutes.
- Cool to room temperature.
- Stir in vodka to taste, strain through fine cloth or a coffee filter and bottle. Rest about 1 week in a cool place before serving.
Notes
Taste before the final adjustment. A recipe should guide dinner, not bully it. If it needs a little more acid, sweetness, salt or heat, make the change in small steps instead of launching the whole spice rack into orbit.
Substitutions
Use equivalent ingredients where needed for allergies or availability, but keep the main sweet/sour/salty/spicy balance intact. This is cooking, not a hostage negotiation.
Storage
Keep covered and chilled. Fresh-fruit or dairy drinks are best used within 1–2 days; fizzy drinks are happiest served the same day before the bubbles file for retirement.
Freezing
Freeze still fruit bases or concentrates if useful, but add carbonation after thawing. Dairy-heavy drinks are better made fresh.
