Q'onoS Klingon Bloodwine

What It Is

Spiced rum, gold tequila, cranberry juice, grenadine and hot sauce make a red Klingon-inspired cocktail built for celebrating victories and making increasingly dramatic speeches.

Origin

Klingon bloodwine is fictional in Star Trek. This red cranberry-and-spirit version is the Earth substitute for people whose liquor store does not stock Q'onoS imports.

Fun Fact

Aroma changes how strongly we perceive flavour, which is why herbs, citrus peel and warm spices can make a simple recipe taste far more complicated than the effort involved.

Ingredients

  • 1 oz spiced rum
  • 1 oz gold tequila
  • Cranberry juice, to fill
  • 1 dash grenadine
  • 2 dashes hot sauce

Steps

  1. Add hot sauce to an ice-filled mug or sturdy glass.
  2. Pour in tequila, rum and grenadine, then fill with cranberry juice.
  3. Shake or stir briefly and serve. Sweeten with dark grape juice if desired.

Notes

Taste before the final adjustment. A recipe should guide dinner, not bully it. If it needs a little more acid, sweetness, salt or heat, make the change in small steps instead of launching the whole spice rack into orbit.

Substitutions

Use equivalent ingredients where needed for allergies or availability, but keep the main sweet/sour/salty/spicy balance intact. This is cooking, not a hostage negotiation.

Storage

Keep covered and chilled. Fresh-fruit or dairy drinks are best used within 1โ€“2 days; fizzy drinks are happiest served the same day before the bubbles file for retirement.

Freezing

Freeze still fruit bases or concentrates if useful, but add carbonation after thawing. Dairy-heavy drinks are better made fresh.
